Should I stop sugar and outside food completely? Can my child eat ice cream?

Short answer

Not completely. Cut down on sugary and outside food so you don't rely on them. Sugar from fruit is fine, and so is a little sugar in milk, kheer or everyday home cooking. Keep shop-bought ice cream for rare treats; homemade ice cream twice a week is fine.

When I say cut down on sugar and outside food, I don't mean ban them. I mean don't rely on them. Outside food is often the easy option, and that's how it ends up filling the week.

Sugar that's fine

  • Sugar from fruit.
  • A little sugar in milk or kheer, now and then.
  • The small amount that goes into everyday home cooking.

The problem is when sugary food fills the day.

What about ice cream?

Shop-bought ice cream has a lot of sugar, plus preservatives and additives, so I keep it for rare treats. I can give you easy, low-sugar recipes to make at home instead, and homemade ice cream twice a week is fine.
