Is high-protein food good for a hyperactive child?

Short answer

Protein on its own isn't the answer, and neither is cutting out carbohydrates. What matters is how the plate is put together: rice with rajma, some vegetables and a little ghee gives steadier energy than a bowl of plain rice.

Parents often hear that protein calms a hyperactive child, or that carbohydrates and sugar are to blame. It isn't that simple. Hyperactivity isn't only about carbohydrates or sugary food, and protein-rich food on its own won't lower it. What helps is how the food is given.

It's the combination that counts

A bowl of plain rice is digested quickly, and a child can be hungry and restless again soon after. Pair the same rice with:

  • Rajma (or another dal) for protein
  • Vegetables for fibre
  • A little ghee

and the meal gives steadier energy that lasts longer. In my practice, children often seem more settled on meals like this.

So it isn't one food that helps, it's the combination you put on the plate.
